Samuel Mars den arrived at Bay of Islands (third visit). 1893— Death of Sir Charles Clifford, first Speaker, New Zealand House of Representatives. 1936 —Military coup in Japan; assassination of Premier. 1943 —American D.F.C. awarded for the first time to an English airman, Wing-Commander R. M. B. Duke-Wooley. 1945 British troops cross Irriwaddy in advance in Burma. 1946 Kiwis suffer second defeat. of tour when beaten by 15 points to 0 by-Monmouthshire at Pontypool. Disastrous fire swept farmland between Tinwald and Ealing, 2000 acres burnt. Fire worst in history i of the County and several times threatened to burn its way to the coast. ,»
