BUILDING COSTS
FURTHER RISE SHOWN BY INDEX (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 24. Building costs are still rising, according to an index made by Mr H. W. L. Bates, of the Auckland branch of the Government Valuation Department. He estimates that the cost a foot on a standard 1000 sq ft house for 1949 was 38s lid. During January of this year the cost of some houses rose to 45s a square foot. The “model” house on which costs are reckoned is a standard weatherboard, tiled roof house with concrete foundations. The cost of paths and other outside work is not included. The cost of building this house was 20s 2d a square foot in 1939, 24s in 1942, 30s 9d in 1945, 38s Id in 1948, and 38s lid last year, with an average of 40s 6d for December, 1949. Another city valuer said to-day that costs had shown no sign of levelling off in 1950. He added that while those wishing to build were desperate enough to chase builders from job to job, competition would play no part in bringing the cost of building down.
