INTER-DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP
NEWS OF THE TURF
ELEVEN HORSES IN FINAL 1 MELBOURNE, February 24. Eleven horses have been selected for the final in the Inter-Dominion trotting championship on Saturday evening. They are: Claude Derby (10 points), Darby Globe (8), Globe Direct (8), Silver Peak (8), Sprayman (7), Findon Queen (6), Captain Sandy (5;, Jdck Hope (5), Necamaid (5), Miss Wingate (4), Dawn Volo (4). Originally the Trotting Control Board was restricting the final to 10 starters, but because of the injury to Claude Derby on Wednesday night the board decided tp select an extra one. There were four Worses with four points, and in a ballot the Victorian horses, Avan Derby and Tivoli Star, were eliminated.
Claude Derby, which suffered a severe strain, to his off fore fetlock, was very lame on Wednesday night, and his prospects of starting in the final appeared remote. He has made such good progress since that his ownertrainer, Roy Shaw, is hopeful that he will take his place in the field. F. -G. Holmes, the driver of Captain Sandy, who was suspended for three months for having caused interference to Claude Derby, has appealed against his sentence to the Trotting Control Board, which will meet late to-day to hear the appeal. If the appeal is dismissed it is likely that Captain Sandy will be driven in the final by one of the leading Victorian drivers. New Zealand will have thiee representatives in the final —Globe Direct, Captain Sandy, and Sprayman; -and all three are strongly fancied.
