LAST HOUSE
State Of Parties Under the provisions of the Representatives of the People Act, 1948, the number of seats in the British House of Commons has been reduced from 640 to 625. University representation has been abolished and former twomember constituencies divided. Many constituencies have been eliminated, new ones created, and others merged or divided. Only 62 in England and Wales remain unaffected. It is therefore impossible to make a reliable comparison between figures for electorates at the 1945 General Election and those of Thursday. The state of the parties at the General Election in 1945 and at the date of the recent dissolution was as follows: —
*The difference between 1945 and the time of dissolution is accounted for by tAvo Labour members having become Labour Independents and one Labour member having become an independent since the 1945 General Election. •In the table above, Ulster Unionists are included among the Conservatives.
