TRAM STRIKE IN MELBOURNE
PLANS MADE FOR FORTNIGHT MELBOURNE, Feb. 24. The State Cabinet has made plans to meet the Melbourne tram and bus strike lasting for at least a fortnight. All moves to end the strike, which began yesterday, have failed. If it continues into next week, the Government is expected to declare a slate of emergency and take action to provide transport services. Private bus services, which are not affected by the strike, have , already been extended to the nearest railway stations and further routes are contemplated. The strike began Avlion the Tramway Board refused the demand of the union for an extra £1 a week in marginal rates for all employees. The board’s action Avas based on the fact that the Arbitration Court ..had twice rejected a similar claim.
