U.S. COAL STRIKE
STATES TAKE SPECIAL POWERS NEW YORK, Feb. 22. The New York State Legislature today granted the Governor (Mr Thomas Dewey) dictatorial power's over the remaining coal supplies in the State. The powers include the right to seize private stocks and impose price controls. Mr Dewey said that the crisis caused by the coal strike had made it necessary for the State to have power to commandeer coal supplies wherever it found them. The main object of the request for increased powers was to have authority to seize coal stocks from non-essential industries and amusement places. The Governor of Virginia (Mr John Battle) to-day declared a state of emergency in Virginia because of the coal strike. Mr Battle has established a fuel commission with power to seize and operate coalmines. Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Ohio, and Illinois also adopted emergency measures to stretch their dwindling coal stocks. The United States is approaching economic stagnation because of the strike. At least 60,000 are unemployed already, and this figure is expected to double within a few days.
