STRIKES LIKELY IN FRANCE
Precautions Taken By Cabinet PARIS, February 23. France is facing the most serious strike situation since » Com-munist-led stoppages paralysed the country towards the end of 1947. About 50,000 workers in the metal and motor industries are already on strike after the rejection of the employers’ offer of a wages increase of 5 per cent. This offer was made in the first negotiations since collective bargaining again became law. Strikes are also threatened in the transport, building, gas, and electrical industries, and more trouble is expected at the docks. The Cabinet has dealt with methods of continuing essential services, and has proposed to increase the penalties for agitation and interference with national : defence. 1 Prison terms of solitary confinement and hard labour for up to 10 years are provided for.
