PHYSICAL FITNESS OF FIREMEN

GREYMOUTH’S OBJECTION TO RULE (P.A.) GREY MOUTH, February 21. An objection to he rule regarding the physical fitness of firemen accepted for service was raised by Grey month at the ann >-' conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association at Reefton. It was suggested that about 75 per cent, of the delegates at the conference were “statistically” medically unfit, though they all might be good firemen. The discussion lapsed when it was pointed out that a medical examination was not compulsory but could be ordered by a brigade authority where it was considered necessary. . It was decided to recommend to the Standards Institute that each type of fire extinguisher in use be painted a distinctive colour as a safeguard against mistakes.
