PLANS FOR THE YEAR

The February meting of the Hampstead Women’s Institute opened with the singing of the Institute song and the reading of the aspirations by all present. The president, Mrs C. Hawkey, presided'over a good attendance of members. Visitors were welcomed, and the motto for the month, “Don’t measure your importance by your morning shadow,” was read by Mrs. Ford. Correspondence included the agenda for the annual meeting of Mid-Can-terbury Federation which is to be held in Ashburton on April IS. Gifts were received for the adopted child, and Mrs Hawkey consented to pack and forward the parcel to Pearl. The convener of the Arts and Crafts circle, Mrs Rose, stated that the picnic of the circle would take place at Wakanui Beach on Wednesday, March 1. Nominations were received for the new committee and also many useful suggestions for the 1950-51 programme. It was reported that the next country women’s holiday party would be touring the West Coast, including Franz and Fox Glaciers about the middle of April. Anyone wishing to make the trip should forward names immediately to the organiser, Mrs Constable.

An invitation was extended to Institute members to the annual meet-, ing of the Hampstead Red Cross which is to be held in the Memorial Hall on March 14. The invitation was accepted, members signifying their willingness to attend this function. Mrs Constable was appointed delegate to the Dominion Federation Con fernce to be held in Christchurch in July. Community singing, with Mrs Chappie at the piano, was much enjoyed. . . 1+ , Monthly competitions resulted:— Bloom, Mesdames Houston and Sinclair 1 (equal), Mrs Hickman 3, Mesdames Stigley and Dailey 4 ’(equal); cluster, Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Haalc 2, Mesdames Boucher and Rose-3 (equal); spike Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Houston 2, Mesdames Glenie and Hickman 3 (equal); seasonal flowers, Mrs Houston and Mrs Childs 1 (equal), Mrs Glenie 3, Mrs Wilson 4; shortbread, Mrs Hickman 1, Mesdames Glenie and Childs 2 (equal), Mesdames Houston and Taylor 4 (equal); duchesse set in colours, Mrs Hickman.
