EMPLOYMENT OF MIGRANTS
AUSTRALIAN DRIVERS OBJECT SYDNEY, Feb. 21. A dispute over the employment of displaced persons immobilised 100 motor lorries at the Darling Harbour goods yard in Sydney to-day, The drivers, who are members of the Australian Railways Union, claimed that the men ■ sent to assist them in loading the lorries had only a smattering of England, and were of little assistance.
When a request for other labour was refused, the drivers stopped their lorries. The men are employed by the Railway Department to unload and cart wool, and maintain a shuttle service between Darling Harbour and the metropolitan goods depots. The council of the Railways Union is considering a proposal that its members should leave their jobs where European migi’ants ignorant of the English language are employed. The railway employees claim that few European migrants can read fixed signals or understand oral signals.
