PERSONAL

Wing Commander D. W. Baird, A.F.C., of Christchurch, returned in the Mataroa from the United Kingdom after two ' years on exchange duties with the Royal Air Force. He will be appointed Director of Operations and Flying Training in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, succeeding Wing Commander J. W. H. Bray. Wing Commander Bray will, upon the arrival of his successor, assume the appointment of Director of Air Staff Policy and Plans. —P.A.

A former conductor and principal cornet player in the Fairey Aviation Works Band, which has won the British open championship seven times in the last nine years, Mr O. E. Clayton, arrived from England in the Mataroa to take up the appointment of conductor of the Invercargill Civic Band. He said he understood that Ken Smith, of Dunedin, the New Zealand and Australian champion cornetist, would replace him as cornetist in the English band. Mr Clayton forecast a successful future for Ken Smith overseas.—P.A.
