METHVEN NEWS

HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE The February meeting of the Meth- . ven District High School Committee was held last week. ‘Mr A. W. Wilson presided, and there were also present: Messrs A. L. Mangin, R. Jenkins, R. E. A. Lock, R. Wootton, G. Stephens (hon. secretary), and G. Chapman, Cohen (headmaster). Correspondence from the Education Board with reference to the provision of a garage to house the new tractor, advising that there would be room in the new bus garage, also advising that a grant of -£7 would be made „ towards the cost of a Zip heater, was received. The Board also advised that ' other repairs and additions applied for would be attended to.

The Anglican Bible Class Union forwarded a donation of £5 for the committee’s funds. It was decided to remit this to augment the funds of the Anglican Bible Class Fund. Accounts amounting to £72 were passed for payment. The secretary reported that the school piano had been sold, and that Messrs Sedley Wells had offered to loan a piano until the arrival of the new model school piano. Mr Mangin reported on the school picnic to Timaru, which was a great success this being the first picnic for many years, and he added that undoubtedly it would be an annual event. Arrangements for the supply of fuel for thG school were left in the hands of the secretary and Mr. Lock. The headmaster, in his monthly report, stated that Methven was now the headquarters of manual training, and that' Miss E. Porter and Mr L. Lees ahd been appointed instructors. The extra time allocated to this centre should make possible further work in woodwork and evening adult groups in homecraft and woodwork later. The | dental nurse (Nurse I Hill) had assumed duties in the Methven Clinic, and, during the period January 19 to 31, 118 : operations were carried out and some pre-school children were treated. The number of patients on the roll is well over that usual for one nurse ,and this must impose a strain on Nurse Hill. There were six candidates for the School Certificate examination and all passed. They were: A. Bishop, M. Milne, J- Nicol, B. Muir, Y. Breach and I. Johnson. All three candidates, E. Souness, M. Norton (Christchurch Training College) and C. McKendry (Dunedin Training College), were successful in entering the teaching profession. The grounds of the school looked well, and the infants’ playground had been started with the erection of horizontal bars and the forming of a concrete edge to the sandpit. Thanks were due to Mr A. Wilson and Mr Lock for this work.

Home and School Association

There was a good attendance at the February meeting of the Methven District High School “Home and School" Association. A cbrdial welcome was extended to the new members of the school staff and also to several new members of the Association. After a lively discussion it was decided to have a “Brains Trust” at the March meeting on March 9th. A permanent feature of future meetings is to be a “questio'n box.” The headmaster, Mr Chapman-Cohen, gave an interesting address on “The Young Child and its Development,” explaining the different stages a child goes through. Two sound films were also shown.
