ST. JAMES THEATRE

“The Sign of the Ram,” based on Margaret Ferguson’s novel, is currently playing at the St. James Theatre. The following, briefly, is the story: Outwardly, the household of . authoress Leah St. Aubyn (Susan Peters) in Cornwall, England, is a happy one. Her husband, Mallory (Alexander Knox) adores, her; his three children by a former marriage, Logan, Jane and Christine (Ross Ford, Allene Roberts and Peggy Ann Garner), are entirely devoted to her. Logan and Jane are particularly indebted to their stepmother who has been confined to a wheelchair ever since she received an injury while saving their lives. But Leah is basically selfish and, in order to keep the family intact within her reach, she tries to break Logan’s engagement to Catherine Woolton (Diana Douglas). She also dissuades Jane from going out with Dr. Simon Crowdy (Ron Randell). Mrs Brastock (Dame May Wliitty), the village gossip, fosters Leah’s suspicions of those around her. When Logan and Jane leave home in defiance of Leah, Christine blames all the trouble on her stepmother’s secretary, Sherida Binyon (Phyllis Thaxter). Leah soon believes that Sherida. is trying to steal Mallory away from her. Christine attempts to poison Sherida, but the act is jliscovered in time. Mallory is finally alienated by Leah’s selfishness, and she is afraid of being left entirely alone. Defeated by her own possessiveness, Leah wheels her chair over the edge of a cliff into the sea.
