HEROIC RADIO OPERATOR
CALLS BRING HELP BLAZING MAIL LINER (N.Z.P.A.-Eeuter—Copyright). (Rec. 9.45) COPENHAGEN, Feb. 20. Signals from a fainting radio operator in a blazing Danish mail liner guided a rescue ship through dense fog off the coast, of Sweden to-day. The rescue ship picked up more than 100 passengers who had taken to the boats in their night attire. The mail-boat—the Danish modern 3000-ton Kronprins Olav—was later towed to Elsinore after the fire had been extinguished. The radio operator, a 52-year-old Dane, was overcome by fumes at his controls. He struggled to the deck, and when the air revived him, he crawled on his hands and knees to his cabin and continued to send his SOS call until help was on the way. Only calm weather prevented severe loss of life.
One survivor said: “If there had been high seas running, or if there had been a strong wind, we would have been roasted like so many chickens in an oven.”
