POWER SUPPLY

ASHBURTON AREA WORK ENGINEER’S REVIEW Dealing with work carried out during the past month, the En-gineer-Secretary, Mr H. G. Kemp, reported to this morning’s meeting of the Ashburton ElectricPower Board as follows: “Work has been mainly confined to overhauling parts of the town area, providing increased capacity where necessary, and in balancing load. In the. East Street area, north of Walnut Avenue, heavier mains were run from Wood’s mill substation and in John Street. One pole was erected and seven recovered. North East Belt and Wakanui Road substation areas have been overhauled and adjusted. In the Fire Station and substation area heavier mains were run in Tailored, William and Burnett and Moore Streets, and the necessary adjustments made. A new 50 KVA' substation has been constructed in Trevors Road, between Wakanui Road and Albert Street, in order to relieve Wakanui Road substation. Four poles were replaced in Cameron Street. “An extension requiring six poles was made to a dairy near the Borough School, while two poles each were used in extensions, in Winchmore and Ashburton and one each at the Aerodrome, Greenstreet and Anama. “Three small transformers were changed on account of increased loading, and one damaged transformerwas replaced. Two small transformers were recovered for rewiring. Rewiring of the Wheatstone line, which has been overloaded, was commenced and the first 11 miles was completed.

“The load curve is now such that some relief can be given to water heating consumers in Methven, Lyndhurst, and Mitcham area, and time switches are being checked and settings altered in that area. A condenser of 170 KVA capacity has been installed in town substations to improve the power factor.;, “Twenty trees were felled in the town area, and 130 steel poles were overhauled in the Anama and Springburn areas, of which 34 were patched.”
