EQUIPMENT FOR TELEPHONES
ORDERS PLACED WITH BRITISH FIRMS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. l‘J. “The Nqw Zealand Government lias, by a recent decision of the Cabinet, just renewed the bulk supply agree, ment .with British telephone manufacturers. Jt is an agreement on a continuing basis, but with foreseeable orders at the moment it will mean that the New Zealand Post Office will, within the next two years, place with British manufacturers orders for telephone exchange equipment to the t'alue of about £3,500,000,” said the Postmaster-General (Mr W. J. Broadfoot) to-day. The agreement is a renewal of one first made by the Post Office in 1945, and is due to expire this year. Since the agreement has been in force New Zealand has placed with British manufacturers orders for equipment to a value of about £5,000,000, Mr Broadfoot said. The agreement provided that a group of five British telephone manufacturers would supply telephone exchange equipment required by the Post Office. The British manufacturers had a resident representative in New Zealand who maintained the closest liaison with the Post Office. A committee of British manufacturers allocated the orders as they were placed to the firms best suited to handle them. That ensured that the best possible deliveries of equipment were made.
