BABY KILLED
TRUCK GOES OVER STEEP RANK MOTHER AND SMALL BOY SERIOUSLY INJURED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 19. A seven-months-old baby was killed and his mother seriously injured when a light truck carrying a farmer and his family went over a 75-foot bank on the East Tamaki-Whitford Road this morning. A boy aged about two years was also taken .to hospital; but the father escaped without injury. The child killed was: Robert Bruce Young, aged seven months, a son of Mr Roy Young, aged 28, a farmer of Papatoetoe. Mrs Ena Young, aged 28, was admitted to the Middlemore Hospital in a dangerous condition with a broken spine and fractured ribs, and another son, Murray Young, aged about 2 years, was also taken to hospital with a broken leg and suffering from shock. Young was taking his family to visit friends near Whitford when the accident occurred. The truck he was driving skidded off the road and came to rest at the bottom of a steep bank. The truck Avas completely Avrecked. Young, Avho Avas thrown out of the truck by the impact, assisted his Avife and children, and then set off to get help from a near-by farm.
MAN KILLED LORRY FALLS INTO CREEK (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 39. A man is believed to have been killed instantly when his lorry fell into a creek about two miles east of Pukemaori about 6 p.m. on Saturday. He was: Cyril Thomas James Sheriff, who was found pinned in the cab of the wrecked truck. Mr Sheriff ifved at Tuatapere, was married, with four children. An inquest was opened at Tuatapere yesterday. After evidence of identification had been given the inquest was adjourned sine die.
BOY DROWNED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 19. Strenuous efforts were made by lifesavers and St. John Ambulance officers to save the life of a boy who collapsed while swimming at Milford beach this afternoon, but the boy died before he could be admitted to the hospital. He was: Graham Coughey, aged 14, a son of Mr S. W. Coughey, of Milford. The boy went swimming soon after 3.30 p.m., and made his way out to an overturned dinghy some distance from the beach. He dived off the dinghy to return to the shore, when he got into difficulties. Mr Duncan Matthew; of Milford, was rowing a dinghy off the beach, and, seeing the boy’s plight, immediately rowed to his aid and pulled him into the dinghy. All efforts to revive him failed.
