NEW PASSPORTS
AUSTRALIAN ACTION WORD “BRITISH” RESTORED (N.Z.P.A.—Copyright.) (Rec. 11.5) CANBERRA, This Day. The Minister of Immigration, Mr H. E. Holt, has announced that from July 1 Australian passports will again bear the words “British passport.” The words were dropped on January 26. 1948, in the regime of Mr A. A. Calwell as Minister of Immigration.
The new passports will bear the words “British Passport” over the Australian coat of arms, under which will be the words “Commonwealth of Australia.” The bearer will continue to be described as an “Australian citizen and British subject,” Mr Holt said that the pew covers would symbolise more- clearly Australia’s membership of the British Commonwealth of Nations without suggesting any lack of pride in Australia’s status as an independent nation. Many complaints had been received from Australians travelling abroad concerning difficulties caused by the present form of passport.
