PRIESTS IN EAST GERMANY
CO-OPERATION WITH NATIONAL FRONT , BERLIN, Feb. IS. Cardinal von Preysing, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Berlin, has warned priests in Eastern Germany and the Soviet sector of Berlin against becoming members of the Communist-con-trolled National Front. In a letter published yesterday Cardinal von Preysing says: “A priest who co-operates in the National Front is allowing himself to be enlisted in efforts which are intended to spread a one-party dictatorship throughout our whole German Fatherland. Priests may not take part in any course of action which, however camouflaged, supports the enemies of the Church." Cardinal von Preysing’s letter is the most strongly worded pronouncement that has colne from any Church leader in Eastern Germany since the begining of the Soviet occupation in 1945. Observers say it is likely to be the signal for an intensified struggle between the Roman Catholic Church and the Communist-dominated East German Government.
