W.C.T.U.

FIRST MEETING OF YEAR The first monthly metinge of the year of the Ashburton Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Thursday in the Methodist Schoolroom. Sister Mildred presided. The Scripture message was from the 4th chapter of Proverbs, the president speaking a few words on the subject. Special reference was made of Frances Willard, founder of the W.C.T.U. A letter was read from the Ashburton No-Licence Council. Mrs Pearce (treasurer) gave the financial report, showing a good credit balance. An opening social of the Band of Hope will be held next in Baring Square Schoolroom. Sister Mildred gave a report of the executive meeting held in Timaru on February 14. Mrs Dr. Densem led the meeting, and delivered a splendid address on “Love sufferest long and is kind.’’, Remits for the convention to be held next month at Wanganui were discussed. It was reported that a large box of tin food for overseas, which had been packed by Mr Woodward, of the Timaru Sailors’ Rest, has been received by the World's W.C.T.U. president and distributed. The parcels were donated by W.C.T.U. branches. At the December meeting Mrs Coldicot was appointed delegate to the Dominion convention in Wanganui. The Temperance fact was the following: “Alcohol is a narcotic drug which quickly impairs the work of the brain and nerves, weakening control, confusing judgment and dulling alertness. You can be sure of this, that in the youth time thei’e is nc other single thing which is capable of doing more damage to the best you’ve got and the best you’re learning than the drink habit.”
