HEAVY RAIN CONTINUES

' The heavy rain which set in before 5 p.m. yesterday continued throughout 1 the night and at 1 o’clock this afteinoon was still falling, although, it stopped at occasional intervals. The fall up till 9 o’clock tliis morning totalled 189 points. Vi Other recordings taken at 9 o clocK this morning were: —Maximum temperature 75.0 degrees, minimum 39.0 degrees, earth 56.1 degrees, barometer 29.62 inches. The sun shone for 5.7 hours yesterday. The rain seems general throughout the county. Up till 9 a.m. to-day Wakanui had recorded 2.02 inches, Pendarves 1.80, Seafleld 1.96, Riverside 1.85, Winchmore 1.40, and Metliven 1.63. At 6 o’clock this morning there was snow on the ground at Methven, but it was quickly cleared by subsequent rain. All reports, at 11 o’clock were “still raining,” and the consensus of opinion was that it would do far more good than harm.

The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather*— General situation; An intense anticyclone over the South Tasman. Sea is advancing onto the South Island. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru to 5 p.m. to-morrow is as follows: . , .... Moderate south-west winds, still fresh at times on the coast; weather cloudy and cold with further showers, but improving from the south to-mor-rom. . Further outlook: Fair though cold.
