EAST EUROPEAN CAMPS

ORGANISATION IN U.S. SEEKS INQUIRY NEW YORK, Feb. 16. The League for Free Russia appealed to-day to the United Nations Economic and Social Council to begin an immediate investigation into alleged slave labour practices in Russia and neighbouring countries. Representatives of the league told reporters that there were between 6,000,000 and 9,000,000 people in slave labotfr camps in Russia, and that there were other such camps in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, and all countries which fall into the Soviet orbit.”

The league includes some Soviet citizens who have fled from the Soviet Union. These include Lieutenant Peter Perogov, one of the two Russian airmen who fled from the Soviet zone of Germany into Austria. Lieutenant Perogov said that there was hardly a family in Russia that did not have either a relative- or a friend who at some time had been in a forced labour camp.
