To bid farewell to Mrs Cook, who is leaving Ashburton, an afternoon was held by the R.S.A. Ladies’ Indoor Bowling Section. The president, Mrs Plunket, presented Mrs Cook t with a brooch on behalf of the members. The afternoon was' spent playing a doubles competition, the winners being Mesdamcs Snell and Chambers.
Scholarships awarded by the New Zealand University Senate include the Batterbee Prize in Greek, which goes to Miss Nathlie A. Wimsett (Victoria University College). Miss Wimsett was a pupil of Ashburton East School and St. Margaret’s College, Christchurch. She is now on her way to Oxford University for post-graduate study. ,
Appointments to teaching positions in district schools were made at the Canterbury Education Board’s meeting this week were as follow: —Miss N. L. Taylor, infant mistress, Alienton; Mr P. M. Sharplin, sole teacher, Ashburton Forks; Mr A. Pont, head teacher, Lauriston; Mr A. L. Cleland, sole teacher, Rokeby; Miss A. Patterson, assistant mistress, Lowcliffe. The resignation of Mr E. ’G. Pankhurst, head teacher at Hinds, was accepted, Mr Pankhurst having received an appointment to an Otago position. ”
