“A” GRADE MATCH WIN FOR ASHBURTON An A grade croquet match between Ashburton and Timaru was played on Wednesday on the Timaru lawns, the Ashburton team winning by five games to four. The results were (Ashburton names mentioned first)—Doubles: Mesdames H. Thompson and J. Cleary 26, v. Mesdames Patchett and Bridges 21; Miss McDowell and Mrs W. B. W. Bell 11, v. Mesdames Savin and Sligo 26; Mesdames A. Smith and A. C. Robinson 26, v. Mesdames Quirk and Holden 18. Singles: Mrs Thompson 5 v. Mrs Patchett 26; Mrs Cleary 26 v. BOWLING
ELDERLY BOWLERS’ DAY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION With 60 bowlers taking part, both greens at the Ashburton Bowling Club were occupied yesterday afternoon, the occasion being Elderly Bowlers' day in connection with the Ashburton Club’s jubilee celebrations. Each team of three played three one-hour games, and at the end of the third round E. Dellow’s team had an outright win on the bottom green. On the top green, however, no fewer than five teams tied, with two wins each, and a play-off was necessary. The short games for the play-off resulted in a win for J. Templeton’s team. The final was then got off, and Templeton’s team, J. Templeton (skip), P. Cookson and G. Currie, beat E. Dellow (skip), W. Anderson and S. Rickard, by three points to two. The afternoon was gloriously fine and the while fixture one of the most enjoyable occasions ever held on Ashburton’s greens.
