COUNTY WORKS

, ACTIVITY IN ASHBURTON ENGINEER’S REPORT Reviewing work carried out in Ashburton County during the past month, the Engineer (Mr R. L. Lindsay) reported to this afternoon’s meeting of the County Council as follows; “In the Ashburton-Rakaia district, while there has been sufficient water available at all intakes during the month a fair amount of additional work had to be carried out to maintain that supply, as some of the intakes were damaged by recent floods. The bank of the supply race and. the dam at the gates of the Acton were partly washed away and had >to be rebuilt with the aid of a bulldozer. At the Methven auxiliary intake the main stream of the north branch of the Ashburton River was hitting hard against, the intake gates and causing the banks of the overflow race to become under, mined. At the Wincbmore main intake it was necessary to use the angledozer to divert sufficient water to the intake gates.';..-.'' “In tile Ashburton-Rangitata area, races supplied by the Remmington Creek were light during the month, due to the fact -that the flow from springs feeding thffi creek lias fallen off. " However, in some cases it was possible to boost the supply from the Lagmhor Creek. On several occasions the races supplying the Flemington and Waterton area were cut off as a result of interference with the control gate on the Flemington main at Anderson’s corner. Floods in the Rangitata River caused erosion upstream of the Cracroft intake and it was necessary to place stone gabion protection work near the intake gate. Trouble has been experienced for some time with the distribution of water at the junction on the Tinwald-Cass- main in Read’s and this position has been remedied by the replacement of the old wooden weir with a concrete one and the fixing of a control gate on the branch race.

“Following the Christmas and- annual holidays the crusher was set up in a pit on the Ashburton-Staveley main highway near Blacks Road. Crushing operations commenced on January 30. The output for the period ended February 3, was 1339 cubic yards, of which 1201 yards was spread on the Ashburton-Staveley main highday, and the balance distributed between Lauriston Road, stock pile at South Street yard, and the track into the crusher. “Angledozer No. 1, during the month was engaged on the fofiowing works; Opening up fairway of South Ashburton at Mt. Possession Bridge, Blowing Point Bridge, and Blands formation of road into Lake Clearwater camping sites; levelling of ground in Mayfield Domain for bowling green; diverting stream and clearing of piles on the Arundel Bridge over the Rangitata River. This machine also carried out a number of private jobs for ratepayers. “Angledozer No. 2 was used to carry out the following works: Stripping of crusher pit at Greenstreet; clearing of slip on Double Hill Runs Road; turning of water to Winehmore main intake; and repairing damaged stop bank and dam at Acton intake.” The report was adopted.
