BRIGHT PLAY

fl CRICKET

i REPRESENTATIVE MATCH CANTERBURY AND ASHBURTON The final day’s play in the representative cricket match, Canterbury versus Ashburton, produced some fine exhibitions of batting, which the spectators seemed to take as an everyday occurrence. Even when the Ashburton batsman, H, Cullen, produced some first-class scoring strokes off the steady attack, there was very little applause. Canterbury’s innings was a fluctuation of fortunes, and it was only a fine seventh wicket partnership by ■ the captain, J. G. Leggat, and M. B. Poore, that enabled them to overtake Ashburton’s first innings score. Continuing on their luncheon adI journment. score of 130 for three wickets, Canterbury lost the wickets of R. T. Dowker, the Plunket Shield player, who was run out, M. J. Moffatt Avho was bowled by P. ZouCh, and another shield player, M. E. Chappie 'who was also bowled by Zouch before he could get going. Then came the highlight of the innings when the Canterbury captain, Leggat, set about retrieving the position. He was ably helped by Poore, who displayed perhaps the best stroke-making of the Canterbury innings. The pair battled on against a steady attack, which atno time let up. The score went to 283, when Leggat, off one over, scored three fours, one six and a two, but with his score at 113 was caught by H. Jordan off the bowling of M. Wall. Canterbury were all out for 319. The Ashburton attack was always steady, and the fielding good. Ashburton’s second .innings was another triumph for H. Cullen, who at stumps had scored 55 not out in fast time. This batsman, wil'd has been out of form in recent competition matches must, after two masterly exhibitions of ‘batting in this match, be a certainty for the combined team against the touring Australia eleven. His timing was excellent, and he hit the ball with a purpose. At no stage did he appear uncomfortable, and both innings were a treat to watch. At stumps. Ashburton had lost four wickets for 83 runs.
