GOVERNMENT OF INDONESIA

FAITH IN ABILITY TO RESTORE ORDER JAKARTA, February 15. The Indonesian Government’s determination to root out “treasonable movements” was emphasised to-day by Dr. Achmed, Soekarno in his Presidential address to: the first meeting of the Provisional Parliament of the United States of Indonesia. Dr. Soekarno said the Government was convinced that it could restore orderly conditions in “a reasonablyshort time.” He urged that the activities of the Javan guerilla leader, Captain R. P. D. Westerling, must not be underestimated. Captain Westerling’s moves had been “planned by reactionaries long before the transfer of sovereignty on December 27.” Dr. Soekarno said he was amazed that Moslems should associate with Captain Westerling’s “organisation of evil and treason.” The Government was pledged to settle the question of Dutch New Guinea within a year by peaceful means, said Dr. Soekarno. The Government was also pledged to strengthen its economic political and spiritual relations with South-ea§t Asian nations, and to seek membership of the United Nations.
