ANNUAL SILVER TREE i —— The annual silver tree effort on behalf of overseas missions was held by the Ashburton Methodist Women’s Missionary Auxiliary yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance, a pleasant afternoon was spent, and financial returns were very satisfactory. The Rev. W. T. Blight opened proceedings with devotions, and welcomed Dominion Union officers in the persons of Mesdames T. Hallan, D. Cockerell and W. R. Featherston, all of Christchurch. Each of these ladies was presented with a bouquet by Diane Leask. Mrs Hallan, Dominion president, formally declared the function open. A short but enjoyable musical programme was presented as follows: ’Cello solos, Miss H. Lill; vocal solos, Miss E. Lill; piano .solos, Miss C. Lill, the last named also acting as accompanist for the vocal and instrumental items. ,
The chairman expressed the thanks of all to the performers and all others who had contributed to the function, mentioning especially the ladies responsible for the decorations, and the visiting officers. After afternoon tea had been served, Mrs G. Fowke and Mrs Kerr acting as "hostesses, the bags from the silver tree were opened -
The trading table, under the supervision of Mesdames M. Holmes, N. Dellow and C. Roberts and Miss F. Dalton, was well patronised, so that its proceeds added appreciably to the sum raised for the afternoon.
