ASHBURTON’S ADVANCE

Fdijmet Resident’s Praise , High praise for the advance - made by Ashburton during the J past 20 years was expressed today by Mr T. M. Clark, how resident in Auckland, but who lived here for about 20 years up to 1929. He was very well-known in business circles, and took a leading part in many other activities in Ashburton. Mr Clark said that he had thoroughly inspected the domains in the cities and added: “Ashburton’s domain is smaller, but it is definitely more beautiful than any of the others. It is wonderful how it has gone ahead, and I am particularly delighted at the general progress of the town. Baring Square is a real work of art.” Mr Clark was very enthusiastic about the advance in the shops, and mentioned the thoroughly up-to-date fittings seen everywhere. “There has been a big improvement in Ashburton in every way, since I was last here,” he commented. Mr Clark, who came down to attend the jubilee of the Ashburton Bowling Club (of -which he was formerly president) will visit Dunedin before returning to Auckland.

Oval Setting Praised

Praise for the Ashburton Domain Oval was voiced yesterday by J. G. Leggatt, captain of the Canterbury cricket team, when replying to a welcome given the visitors by the Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) and the chairman of tlie Cricket Association (Mr F. Pritchard). Mr Leggatt stated that, with the exception of Carisbrook at Dunedin, the Ashburton Oval provided a finer setting for a cricket ground than any other he had played on in New Zealand. He was especially interested to hear that most of the work on the wickets was done by voluntary labour and commented that it showed a great keenness for the game which reflected the greatest credit on local enthusiasts.
