POLICE RETREAT

RIOT IN NEWCLARE (Rec. 11.0) CAPETOWN, Feb. 14. Three hundred police raided the non-E,uropean township of Newclare early to-day and detained 250 Africans. The raid followed rioting in the town last night, when some policemen and Africans were injured. The riot started when police in two flying-squad cars checking African passes tried to arrest a man. All Africans must carry these passes to live, work and travel in urban areas.

The Africans stoned the police and forced them to retreat.
