WARNING ISSUED BY CORONER

INQUEST INTO MAN S DEATH A warning that shopkeepers were liable to prosecution if they sold methylated spirits to.-a person who was suspected of consuming the alcohol, was issued by the District Coroner (Mr E. C. Bathurst) yesterday, after returning a verdict at the inquest into the death of William Stewart Home Paulin, aged G2, a cook, of Ashburton. Constable I. Rose said that at 12.40 p.m. on February 9 he received information .that a man was sitting on a seat at the southern approach to the Ashburton traffic bridge. The man said he had consumed a quantity of methylated spirits on February 7 and 8, and was not feeling well. He was then taken to the Ashburton Public Hospital, said Constable Rose. Dr. John Joseph Horan said that Paulin was admitted to the hospital on February 9, and died the same day. Dr. John Russell Wells said that he conducted a post-mortem examination. He attributed death to heart failure resulting from coronary atheroma, accentuated by exhaustion and tissue dehydration from the consumption of a highly toxic variety of alcohol. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
