FIRE AT LAKE PUKAKI

DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £ISOO TIMARU, February 13. Damage estimated at £ISOO was done at Lake Pukaki yesterday when the main ablution block of the Public Works Department caught fire at 10.45 p.m. The Lake Pukaki Volunteer Fire Brigade, under the command of Mr J. McKay, had difficulty with the water pressure, but made a good save, although the flames had a strong hold. The laundry block adjacent also caught fire, but the flames were put out quickly. * ‘ ‘ • When the hoses were being played on the fire, a boiler exploded with terrific force and blew piping and roofing 50 yards. Fortunately the explosion blew out in the opposite direction to the firemen and no one was injured. (■■■, i., The cause of the fire is umcnown, but it is thought'that if was due to a defect in the drop feed oil fuel burner system.' When the night watchman, Mr Peter Blaikie, was on his rounds at 10 p.m. there was no sign of the fire. Because of the long week-end, many of the fire brigade members were absent.
