SLOW SCORING
CRICKET
ASHBURTON MATCHES COMPETITORS ADVANCED Slow scoring in both senior cricket matches on Saturday tended to make them uninteresting, but Star livened up matters in the concluding stages of their game against Kia Ora to strengthen their position at the top of the ladder. Highlights in junior games were Lauriston’s score of 210 for six wickets (declared) against High School, and Old Boys’ effort in scoring 60 runs in 15 minutes in their second innings against' Technical. L. Hart and N. Burrows were the batsmen, Hart hitting five sixes and six fours.
Star Defeats Kia Ora / On the Oval Kia Ora lost their first wicket before any runs had been scored in the match against Star, but G. McCormick retrieved the position with a patient knock of 53 runs. He and L. Holloway added 48 runs before McCormick was brilliantly caught by A. Kerr, who held a one-handed catch in the outfield. Holloway continued to score slowly, but with his total at 27, was bowled by D. McKay. S. Kerr, after a slow start, set about the bowling, hitting five fours in a row, providing the only bright spot of the innings . He also fell a victim to McKay. Kia Ora were all out for. 192 (McCormick 53, Kerr 33, Holloway 27, S. McElhinney 17). D. McKay was the chief trundler for Star. He bowled 28 overs and captured five wickets for 68 runs. Star were set the difficult task of getting 190 rung in slightly over an hour and a half, and it appeared unlikely they would score secure when the openers commenced quietly. However, they had 40 runs on when the first wicket fell. From then on the scoring increased rapidly. F. Holloway an opening batsman was content to keep his wicket intact, while more vigorous batsmen took toll of the bowling. The required runs were scored with 15 minutes to spare, an excellent effort and a well deserved wip. At stumps the score was 210 for six wickets (Holloway 54, F. Pethig 32, A. Kerr 24, McKay 21, T. Spicer 21, L. Kerr 16, J. Gibson 13 not out). Best bowling figures were secured by S. Kerr (two for 42) and W. Smallridge (two for 50). 1 Technical Defeat Old Boys
On a wicket which played well, Old Boys batted first in the game against Technical on the Technical ground. They were soon on the defence against a well-directed and accurate attack, assisted by keen fielding. The first two batsmen for Old Boys were both clean bowled by M. Wall with the score at four. Wickets fell steadily, and scoring was very slow throughout. Top scorer for Old Boys was N. Preston who executed some risky shots in making 15, before he was caught by W. Holland off the bowling of N. Nottle. Old Boys were all out for a moderate 78 (Preston 15, J. Harper 12, K. Weir 12, N. J Bell 11, P. Zoueh 10). Bowling for Technical, Nottle took' four wickets for 15 runs off eight overs, Wall three for 30 and C. Keen two for 14. Technical also started very badly, the wickets of N. Jones, R. Sheehan and C. Keen all falling with only 14 runs on the board. However, A. Porter and M. Wall became associated in a fruitful fourth wicket partnership which yielded 44 runs. Old Boys’ fielding was also smart, and the batsmen had to be content with singles in most cases. At 5 o’clock the score board read 58 for four wickets, making a total of 158 runs for nearly four hours’ play. When the game was adjourned the score stood at 80 for five (Wall 27, Porter 22, D. Porter 11 not out). A great performance by P. Zouch, bowling for Old Boys, demonstrated his consistency with the ball. He bowled 21 overs, 10 maidens, and took three wickets for 30. He was ably supported by the left-hander, J. Harper, who also bowled extremely well. His figures read 19 overs, 7 maidens, two for 31, and he was able to extract some turn out of the wicket, an effort in itself. Technical thus won by five wickets.

Forsythe took four wickets for 14 runs and Roulston three for 16. Lauriston had an easy win over High School by 132 runs on the first innings. Lauriston scored 210 for six wickets declared (B.
