EMPIRE GAMES

CONCLUDING DAY MORE RECORDS BROKEN (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 12. Twenty-eight British Empire Games records were broken and two world’s records were equalled during the fourth British Empire Games which ended in Auckland yesterday, after a week of memorable athletic achievement. With Miss Yvette Williams’ outstanding performance in the women’s broad jump yesterday, New Zealand now holds five Empire Games records. These include four which were established at previous games and remain intact after the latest festival. Five more records were broken yesterday in the fields and track events, in spite of torrential rain, and one cycling time was bettered at night. Australian was by far the most successful of the la countries competing in the games. Of 88 gold medals award ; ed to title winners, Australia won 34, England 19, New Zealand 10, South Africa and Canada eight each, Scotland five, Malaya two, and Fiji and Ceylon one each. Every competing country took awards for first, second or third placings in at least, one event. New Zealand’s title successes were in athletics, bowls, wrestling (two each), swimming, rowing, weight-lift-ing and boxing (one each). Australia’s ally of gold medals, already impressive before the final games events, was increased by seven yesterday, when Australians won five of ,the 11 athletic titles and two out of the three gold medals for the cycling events.

Spectators Drenched The weather for the first four days of the games festival was perfect. It broke on Thursday afternoon, and thousands of spectators on the uncovered terraces at the Olympic Pool were drenched to the skin. Again yesterday there was heavy rajn in the afternoon, but the programme was pushed ahead, and the athletic programme completed. Spectators'- "on the Eden Park embankment sheltered under umbrellas and all manner of improvised cover for the greater part of the afternoon. Even after heavy rain,, records were broken.'* On each day of the track and field events there was not enough wind to affect the recognition of record-breaking performances. One of the most enthusiastic patrons of the games -was the Governor-Gen-eral (Sir Bernard Freyberg), who was among those who ignored the heavy rain and remained seated on an open seat until the end of Thursday’s swimming programme. He attended all the main programmes and visited sessions of all the other sports.
