PRISONER’S ESCAPE

BREAK DURING EXERCISE PERIOD MELBOURNE, February 12. The Governor of the Ballarat prison (Mr R. Souter) was knocked down and kicked when he tried to prevent five prisoners from escaping early today. Two prisoners were stopped by a warder at riflepoint, but the other three scaled the wall of the prison and got away by crowding on to a motor-cycle which was abandoned when it ran out of petrol 10 miles away. The men took to the bush. The break was made during the exevvise period. Five prisoners suddenly charged towards the wall and knocked the governor down. The bush in which the three men are believed to be hiding has been surrounded by 40 policemen and warders.
