WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MAYFIELD MEETING - The annual meeting of the Mayfield Women’s Institute was held in the Band Hall, when the president (Mrs K. L. Moore) presided, over a good attendance. Motions of sympathy were extended to Mrs J. G. Mathews and the Dunstan family. v Mrs C. Sewell read the aspirations, and the president read the Dominion president’s letter. Mesdames S. Miller and A*. Rushton were nominated delegates to the annual meeting of the Federation in April. It was decided to again take up the sponsorship of Anna, the Greek girl, for another year. It was also decided to hold a combined flower show in the hall on February 16, with the Mayfield Women’s Division. Vocal solos, sung by Miss Shirley Murdoch, were much appreciated. Sprays were presented- to the retiring officers, Mesdames K. Moore and R. K. Dellow and Miss E. Goldsmith and Mrs Morgan. They were made by Mesdames J. McCormick and Jos. Murdoch. Mrs E. Morgan, of Mt. Somers, gave a talk on coming events in the Federation year and on institute affairs generally. She also presided for the election of officers which resulted: President, Mrs R. W. Oakley; vicepresident, Mesdames K. L. Moore and J. G. Mathews; treasurer, Mrs G. B. Murdoch; committee, Mesdames G. J. Murdoch, C. Sewell, B. McMurchy, W. Biddick, T. Taylor, J. McCormick, R. K. Dellow, H. T. Lilley and D. Kirkwood; hostess convener, Mrs G. Sewell; auditor, Mr A. H. Guiney. Prizes won for the year were presented by Mrs Morgan as follows: Most points, Mrs H. Scown;; flowers, Mrs -J. McCormick; vegetables, Mrs Scown; cookery, Mrs C. Jewell; sewing, Mrs K. Moore; best programme, Mrs T. Taylor 1, Mrs R. Bonisch 2; magazine picture, Mesdames McCormick 1, Sewell and Scown (equal) 2.
The hostesses were Mesdames J. Mecormick and W. Biddick.
Monthly Meeting The monthly meeting of the Mayfielcl branch of the W.D.F.F. was held in the Lodge Room recently, when the president (Mr T. Taylor) presided. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mrs J. G .Matthews and to the relatives of the late Mrs W. H. Ward, a former Dominion president. Flowers were sent to Mrs Luskie, a member who is in hospital. Mrs Marsh was directed to write a letter of sympathy to the daughter of an elderly man in England to whom the branch had been sending parcels. The motto for the day “Pacts of friendship will not last without acts of friendship,” was given by Mrs Bean, and the roll call, “cooking mistakes in early married life,” brought forth many amusing errors but none that proved fatal. It was decided to help in an effort to sponsor Anna, the Greek child. Competitions resulted: Best - bloom, Mrs T. Taylor 1, Mrs G. Ellery 2, Mrs R. Bonisch 3; spike or truss, Mrs J .D. Murdoch 1, Mrs Bonisch 2, Mrs Ellery and Mrs Simms (equal) 3; large bowl mixed flowers, Mrs Simms 1, Mrs J. D. Murdoch 2; small bowl mixed flowers, Mrs Simms 1, Mrs Taylor 2, Mrs Ellery 3; collection salad vegetables, Mi's Ellery 1, Mrs Simms 2; article not more than ss, Mrs Simms 1, Mrs Ellery 2; sponge sandwich, Mrs Marsh 1. The hostess was Mrs J. D. Murdocn. A combined W.D.F.F. and Women’s Institute outing was held in Ashburton when members were conducted through the woollen mills and through the Domain by the Curator.
