BRITISH TRADE RETURNS

EXPORTS TO U.S. DOWN LAST QUARTER RISE (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter~-Copyrlgnt). (Rec. 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 10. The Board of Trade announced to-day that British exports to the United States last year totalled £57,000,000, £9,000,000 less than in 1948. The value in the fourth quarterafter devaluation—rose sharply after a fall in the middle of the year. At £20,100,000 it exceeded the 1948 average by one fifth. Compared with the third quarter there was a rise of £5,800,000. / The announcement added that the main feature of the .recent import trade had been a reduction in the proportion of supplies, from the Western Hemisphere, from 43 per cent, in 1947 to 30 per cent, in 1948 and 28 per cent, last year. The proportion received from the sterling area rose from 31 per cent, in 1947 to 36 per cent, in 1948, and stayed about the same level in 1949.—Reuter.
