SOUTH CANTERBURY WIN. MATCH WITH ASHBURTON. In the women’s representative hockey match played at the Timaru Park on Saturday, South Canterbury defeated Ashburton by four goals to two. On the play, a draw would have been a better indication of the merits of the teams. The visitors played impressively in the first half, the forwards combining well, while they also received good support from the halfline. The full-backs, also, were very sound. In the second half, Ashburton lapsed unaccountably, the forwards lost their sting, while the halves were frequently out of position. South Canterbury, on the other hand, showed marked improvement. South Canterbury won the Initial bully, but D. Fowke broke through well, sending on to F. Gudsell, the wing sending across a good centre, which J. Davison trapped, but was beaten by the goalie, V. Newman. Ashburton kept up the pressure, D. Fowke finding the net with a stinging shot. Ashburton 1, South Canterbury 0. South Canterbury then took a hand on attack, but the forwards lacked finish. When J. Orr failed to stop the visiting forwards, F. Gudsell put in a good run down the line, again giving the centre possession, but she failed to find the net. The hall was sent across by M. Anderson to M. Williamson on the edge of the circle, and she found the net with a rising shot. South Canterbury 1, Ashburton 1. Up to this stage the visitors had been the more impressive side, their stick work arid positional play being sound. The forwards saw plenty of the ball, hut an inclination to hesitate before passing saw them frequently robbed of possession. South Canterbury conceded two penalty corners, hut Ashburton were penalised for carrying on the second, and the Green found relief. The Greens reached the visitors’ circle.
but M. Watson got back in time to clear nicely. For the lirst time in the game Ashburton conceded a corner, but they cleared well, M. Graham setting the forwards going in a good rush. Ashburton penetrated to the circle, where V. Newman brought off a fine save. The Ashburton forwards dominated play for a period, but C. Donaldson and M. Anderson became associated’ in a promising movement, which reached the visitors’ circle, where M. Watson saved well. The visitors took play to the South Canterbury circle being awarded a penalty corner, but M. Williamson saved with a fine run. The Green forwards carried on, C. Donaldson just failed to find the net. The same player had more success a moment later, however, beating the goalie nicely to put the home team in front. South Canterbury 2, Ashburton 1. There was no further score at halftime. South Canterbury attacked on resuming and E. Blissett had a good scoring chance when she obstructed, and the visitors cleared. Ashburton cleared and immediately invaded the home circle thei’e being four forwards against the goalie, but she beat them all. It was then Ashburton’s turn, but like South Canterbury their circle play was weak. They soon evened the score, however. Followng the failure of J. Orr to stop a long shot, J. Davison secured and taking the ball just into the circle, found the net with a good shot. Ashburton 2, South Canterbury 2. J. Davison and J. Lowe invaded the Green’s circle, but they -were well beaten by J. Orr, who cleared to the oposite end, where from a scramble, C. Donaldson netted. South Canterbury. 3, Ashburton 2. Enlivened by this success the Green forwards again attacked hotly, but the movement was repulsed and crisp passing between E. Anderson, J. Davison and J. Lowe enabled the visitors to clear-. The extra goal seemed to be making all the difference to the game, and Ashburton were not making as good an uphill fight as was expected. The forwards were not as certain in their passing as earlier, and the positional play of the halves was poor. Ashburton, came back with a pretty rush, which J. Orr stopped. Ashburton had a great chance when V. Newman left her goal to stop a long shot and missed, but the ball beat the onrushing forwards to the net. A moment later J. Lowe had a shot, but the ball flew high over the net. The Greens cleared to the opposite end, where a penalty bully was ordered against the visiting goalie P. Hyland. In this she obstructed, and M. Blisset was awarded a penalty goal. The game ended: South Canterbury T Ashburton ’ 2 Messrs C. Bishop (Ashburton), and M. Richardson (Timaru) controlled the game. MEN’S REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS.
