FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “Guardian,” August 7, 1887). Election Meeting.—The Hon. W. R-olleston addressed a meeting at Seafield on Thursday evening. The meeting was not a very large one. Mr H. Ayrton occupied the chair. A vote of thanks was carried at the close of the address, and were it not for Mr Rolleston’s expressed wish to the contrary a vote of confidence would also, in most likelihood, have been carried. Mr llolleston will, for the next few days, be addressing the electors at the other end of the electorate. The date of further meetings in this district will be announced shortly. , Football Teams.—The following are the names of the Woollen Factory football team which will play a match with the Ashburton.Club to-morrow:—-J. Oliver, Thompson, Pearce, Burnip, Graham, Wood, Pennington, McKenzie, Steele, Edmonds, Paterson, Walmsley, Rodgers, Choate and Ibell. The following will represent Ashburton:—Moore (2), Fooks (3), Kingswell, Lechner, Simpson, Foley, Clark, Hargreaves, Stewart, Cuthbertson, Moss and Muller; emergencies, Chapman, Curtis, Low and Buchanan. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” August 7, 1912.) Hare Shooting.—With two hare drives—one at Spreadeagle with eight guns, and the other at Westerfield with 12 guns—2ls hares were obtained at the end of last week. Experimental Farm Proposed.—A petition is being taken round Ashburton for signature asking the Government to purchase an experimental farm in this County. Should the position result favourably Ashburton will very largely benefit. . Besides affording farmers the opportunity to inspect closely agricultural experiments, it will mean a good deal in the matter of increased business. Hinds Defeats Lismore.—After several * arrangements which the weather and the force of circumstances served to prevent the Lismore and Hinds Football Clubs finally met on the former club’s grounds on Saturday. After an even and keenly contested game tho visitors won by 10 points to three. C. Chisnall and A. Irvine scored for Hinds, and T. Gibbs kicked two splendid goals, while O. S. Williams scored for Lismore. Of the two teams the Lismore forwards excelled their visitors, while the Hinds backs were faster and heavier than those of the home team. Mr W. Johnson carried the whistle.
