THE WEATHER.
CONDITIONS IMPROVE TO-DAY. Following the southerly storm yesterday the weather in Ashburton to-day showed an .improvement. The cold southerly wind blew* strongly all night, although there was little rain; but it had abated to a large extent this morning. There was still a cool southerly breeze, but the sky, which w r as overcast early, cleared later in the morning, w r hen there was some bright sunshine. The rain yesterday amounted to 11 points. Four degrees of frost were recorded at the Domain weather station this morning. The maximum temperature yesterday was 56.7 degrees, and the inside minimum last night 33 degrees. The barometer at 9 o’clock this morning had risen to 29.69 inches from 29.10 inches yesterday morning. TO-DAY’S FORECAST. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day issupd the following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: An intense anticyclone is located over . south-eastern Australia, and extends across the Tasman Sea. While pressure is still very low’ to the east of New Zealand, pressure is rising rapidly over the Dominion. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows : Strong south-westerly wdnds, still of gale force in places, but slowly moderating. Weather changeable and very cold, with scattered passing showers, but gradually improving. Severe frosts inland. Seas rough to high.
