HOCKEY.
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. SYDNEY, August 6. The men’s hockey championship of Australia began on the Sydney Sports Ground to-day in ideal weather. Ten teams, representing all the States and New Zealand, are taking part. The visiting teams, including the New Zealanders, were given a civic reception this morning. New Zealand’s first game will be against New South Wales to-morrow. To-day’s matches resulted: Tasmania drew with Western Australia, 2-2; Queensland beat Victoria, 4-1; New South Wales beat South Australia, 4-0.
