THE WHEEL.
STORY OF ITS EVOLUTION. It is not known ivho invented the wheel, but it dates back to the days before history was written. Probably somebody used a tree trunk for rolling a heavy load over the ground and this originated rollers. The next step would be the hollowing of the middle of the roller. This would eventually lead to two fixed wheels at the ends, with <Ui axle all in one piece. A great step forward was taken when each wheel was made separately through which an axle could bo passed, and the wheel turned independently of the axle. All early wheels were solid, but, later, a lighter type of wheel, with spoke, huh and felloes or rim, was invented. For several thousand years there was little or no improvement. In modern times came the greatest invention iu connection with the wheel for 5000 years—that of the pneumatic tyre. The wheel seems an obvious idea to-day but the person who first thought of it must have been a genius. He did as much for civilisation as anybody.
