SPEEDY ARMAMENT
PROGRESS IN BRITAIN. STRONGEST POWER SOON. LONDON, July 12. By the end of the year Britain’s defences will he ahead of those of any country in the world, says the “Sunday Graphic.” This applies even to the Army, in spite of its inferiority in numbers. The great new drive for mechanisation of the Army means that, although the British Army will be smaller than those of France, Germany, Italy or Russia, it will be far superior in equipment. In addition, Britain will have the largest Air Force and Navy. The Army programme includes three more tank battalions, thousands of large and medium whippet tanks, and two types of anti-tank weapon, capable of penetrating the armour of any tank. Every fourth infantry battalion will be armed with machine-guns in place of rifles, and the remaining battalions will
have*'their number of machine-guns increased. This new gun has a greater firing speed than any other in the world. All transport is being mechanised and a large portion of it is being fitted with caterpillars for traversing rough country. Mechanical trench and gunemplacement diggers, similar to those used by civil engineers,- are being provided.
