TO BE SENTENCED

RAKAIA SHOP ENTERED. TWO MEN FOUND GUILTY. (Special to the ‘‘ Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., charges of the conversion of motor-ears and thefts were admitted by two men. They were Henry Walton Phillips and John Henry Wilson, alias Gordon Cyril James, alias William John McDermott. They pleadea guilty to all charges. Jointly they were sent to the Supreme Court for sentence for breaking and entering the shop of Thomas Oliver Johnson at Scargill on July 16 and stealing a safe, goods and money of a total value of £IOO. Wilson was sent to the Supreme Court for sentence separately for breaking and entering the shop of C. Hardy and Company, Ltd., at Rakaia, on July 5, and committing theft there; for breaking and entering the shop of Frew Brothers at Amberley on July 6, and committing theft there; and for breaking and entering the dwelling of William Horatio Candy and committing theft there. Jointly the men pleaded guilty to converting to their own use a car valued at £2OO at Dunedin, the property of Wallace Trevor Smith, a car valued at £3OO at Christchurch, the property of Thomas Edgar Wiltshire, a car valued at £3OO at Oamaru, the property of William Henry Brown, and the theft of 12 gallons of petrol valued at £1 2s, at Scargill, the property of Thomas Oliver Johnson. Separately James pleaded guilty to the conversion of a car valued at £2OO at Christchurch, the property of Jack O ’ Grady, a ear valued at £220 at Christchurch, the property of A. and T. Burt, Ltd., and a car valued at £2OO at Christchurch, the property of Joseph Harvey Michelle. On the summary charges the men were convicted and remanded until August 20 for sentence. On the Rakaia charge Arthur Edgar Mee, shop assistant, said he found the door of the store ajar on the morning of July 5, and the goods were in a state of disorder. There were indications of someone having had a meal, and goods of a value of £5 13s 5d were missing. Wilson made a statement that he threw away a stolen overcoat in the Rakaia Gorge, Detective Herron said. He travelled to Rakaia in a car stolen at Christchurch.
