TASMAN CROSSING.
THE QUESTION OF THE RECORD. SPECULATION IN SYDNEY. 'United Press Association—Copyright.] (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. “The Sydney Morning Herald” says that shipping circles are speculating whether the Awatea and Monterey, leaving Auckland to-day, will race across the Tasman. The “Herald” adds that to Australians and New Zealanders the speed record for the Tasman has had great significance ever since the days of sailing ships, and all would like to see it recaptured by a British ship. It should only be a matter of time before the Awatea secures the honour. A record crossing is unlikely this week-end, however, as the Tasman is in a turbulent mood.
