FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 6, 1887.) The Ashburton'Seat—Mr C. W. Purnell announces himself as a candidate for the Ashburton seat, and will address the electors in the various centres in the course of a feAV uays. Ingleside Meeting—The fourth ingleside meeting, under the auspices of the Ashburton Caledonian Society, was held in the OddfelioAvs’ Hall on Thursday. As is always the case at these gatherings there Avas a very large attendance, and the proceedings were of a most enjoyable nature from start to finish. The dances A\ r ere interspersed with vocal and instrumental items, the Avliole contributing to make one of the most successful allairs of the kind yet held. Hunt Club Steeplechase—The annual steeplechase meeting in connection with the Ashburton County Hunt Club came off yesterday on the Ashburton Racecourse, in fine hunting Aveather, and proved in every Avay successful. The attendance was good in spite of the cold Aveather, and the racing ail round Avas close enough to be exciting and the speculation above the average. All officials worked hard to make the meeting successful. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 6, 1912.) Hospital Board Revenue—The revenue of the Ashburton Hospital Board for July amounted to £2236 3s sd. The principal items were:—Government subsidy £1402 4s 6d, Ashburton County Council £291 17s lOd, patients £59 2s 6d, Borough Council £2O 17s od, Hampstead Town Board £34 6s 3d. New Post Box—The Postmaster-Gen-eral, writing to Mr VY. Nosworthy, M.P., states that authority has been giA 7 en for the post box in Wakanui Road to be transferred to the corner of Wakanui Road and Cass Street, and for a neAv box to be erected at the corner of William Street and Wakanui Road. The Bo tough Solicitor—The “Guardian” is in receipt of a postcard from Mr H. D. Acland (Borough Solicitor), in which under date Copenhagen (Denmark), June 23, he says : “Lam over here looking at the dairying and small holdings. Men make a living on six acres, so they say.” Curate Transferred—The Rev. Father O’Hare, Avho till recently acted as curate to the Very Rev. Dean O’Donnell, has been appointed to, and accepted, the position of parish priest at Qhura, Westland.
