WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
SIXTH BIRTHDAY PARTY. THE BRANCH AT HAMPSTEAD. The Hampstead Memorial Hall was gaily decorated with gold and green streamers and greenery on Wednesday evening on the occasion of the sixth birthday party of the Hampstead Women’s Institute. The president (Mrs M. Constable) presided and welcomed a large number ot members and friends. The following contributed a very enjoyable programme : —Pianoforte solo, Mrs Green; vocal solos, Miss B. Opie, Mrs R. Pearce (Willowby-Eiffelton), Mr Bishop; piano-accordion, Mr and Miss Hansen; elocution, Miss M. Taylor; dancing, Barbara Hunt and Donald Cooke. Miss M. Sutherland and Mrs Green played the accompaniments. A humorous competition was won by Mr Watson, and men’s hat trimming resulted: Mr K. S. McEachen 1, Mr Pile 2. The birthday cake was presented by Mrs Morton, who cut it and was greeted with musical honours, Mrs Hunt, senr., lit the candles, and Mrs Knight (first president) extinguished them. The president presented Mrs Morton with a small gift of appreciation. Greetings were received from delegates representing the Mid-Canterbury Federation, Willowby-Eiffelton, Fairton, Wakamii and Allenton Institutes. Mrs K. S'. McEachen (secretary) gave greetings on behalf of sick and absent members. Paper hats were distributed and supper was served, followed by a dance, with Mr B. Thompson acting as M.C. and Mrs Green at the piano.
GROUP MEETING AT FAIRTON. Members of the Wakanui and Hampstead Institutes visited Fairton yesterday to attend a group meeting. There was a good attendance, and all were welcomed by the local president (Mrs H. Thompson). Mrs K. M. McEachen (group president) occupied the chair for the remainder of the afternoon. Items were given by members of the four institutes as follow 7 Song, Mrs Horne (Hampstead); recitation, Mrs McNatty (Allenton); piano solo, Miss Frampton (Wakanui). A short play-reading w r as given by three Fairton members, Misses Parson, Taylor and Worthington. Competitions were won by Mrs T. S. Taylor and Miss M. Oliver. The competitions, judged by Mesdames Harris, D. A. Morgan and T. S. Taylor, resulted: — Group Competitions—Something hew r from something old: Mesdames Silcock (Fairton) and McNatty (Allenton) (equal) 1. Specimen bloom: Mrs H. Chappell 1. ' Local Competitions—Marble cake: Mrs H. Chappell and Mrs J. Willis (equal) 1, Mrs F. Silcock 3, Miss Oram 4. Heaviest lien eggs: Mrs Willis 1, Miss Dunphy 2, Mrs Chappell 3. Specimen bloom: Mrs Chappell 1, Miss Oram 2, Mrs Ford 3. Article made from two skeins of wool: Mrs W 7. P. Anderson 1, Miss Anderson and Airs Evans (equal) 2, Mrs Chappell and Miss W’orthington (equal) 4. The committee were hostesses. Mrs H. Clisyipell was in charge of the sales talile and mystery parcels, which were well patronised.
