(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN. ENJOYABLE CONCERT. A concert in aid of the funds of the Methven Public Library was held in the Town Hall, The programme was contributed by Christchurch performers organised by Mr Noel Burtt. There was a. good attendance, and the programme jvas thoroughly enjoyed by those present. Those contributing were: Instrumental trio, Mrs Reeves, Miss Algie~and Miss Robertson; eccentric dance, Miss Olga Flint; humorous items, Mr Bracey Wilson; songs, Mr G. Woods; violin solo, Miss Robertson; tap dance, Miss Virginia Flint; songs, Mr NoeL Burtt; humorous items, Mr L. Cummins and Mr Arthur Keen. Mr R. F. Renai (chairman of the Library Committee) thanked the party for helping the funds. \At the conclusion of the concert a dance was held. Music was supplied by Mr W. Symons, and Mr R. J. L. [Duff was master of ceremonies. Oddfellows’ Lodge. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Methven held last evening, the P.G. (Bro. T. G. Lilley) presiding over a good attendance. Sick pay was passed in favour of one member. Three brothers were admitted /to the White Degree. Two candidates were elected, P.G.’s Bros. L. Vaughan and R. Drummond acting as conductors. At the conclusion of the lodge asocial hdur was spent and supper enjoyed. HINDS. LADIES’ CHURCH GUILD. The Hinds Methodist Young Ladies’ Church Guild met at the residence of Mrs Walter Frampton yesterday afternoon, when Miss Eva Ellis presided over a good attendance. Mrs A. S. Hayman, of Willowby, gave an illustrated address on “Hymns of the Christian Church.” Miss Anne Frampton was pianiste. MOUNT SOMERS. RAINFALL IN JULY. 4 %v&i ."i ‘ '• ... . J ./ Rain fell on, 10 days during July, 'totalling 253 points, compared with 520 points in the corresponding July. A maximum of 72 points fell on the 21st. The year’s total is 24.42 inches, compared with 29.83 inches for the corresponding period last year. ' At Rueeleugh the total fall recorded was 183 points, bringing the year’s total to 18.45 inches.

‘ Church Army Mission. The Church Army teaching mission which is. being conducted in the parish by Captain Kee is being held at Mount Somers this week, and the services are being largely attended. Last evening a Bible class rally was held, when, upwards of 100 members* and friends attended a high tea in the Library and afterwards attended the mission service at St. Aidan’js Church, which was overcrowded. Captain Kee stated that it ■was one of the greatest thrills he had experienced for many months to see such a splendid rally of young people in such a scattered district. RAKAIA. THE WEATHER IN JULY. Rain fell in Rakaia on seven days during July, making a total of 1.94 inches, compared with 4.28 inches for the corresponding month last year, and 2.78 inches for June of this year. The heaviest fall was recorded on July 21, when .08 inches fell. The total rainfall to date is 17.32 inches, compared with 27.10 inches last year. Temperance Union. The monthly meeting of the Rakaia Young People's’ Christian Temperance Union was held in St. Andrew's Schoolroom. Mr A. Wilson presided. Membership badges were received. Choruses were sung and games were held. Methodist Ladies’ Guild. Mrs H. HopvvOod presided over a good attendance .-at a meeTing of the Rakaia Methodist Ladies’ Guild recently. A talk on “Old Hymns” was given by Mrs *Nicol. It was decided to hold a concert later in the year, and to invite the Ashburton Silver Band. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Hopwood and Nicol. WILLOWBY. MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY The fortnightly meeting of the Wdlowby Mutual Improvement Society was held last night in the Willowoy Sehoolrooom, presided over by the Re /. W. W. Avery. Mr A. Prentice, of Ashburton, gave a travel talk on “A Trip to Italy.” The appreciation of the audience was voiced by Mr W. T. Lill, who proposed a hearty vote of thanks m the speaker. Mr Prentice displayed a book of views of places of importance which he visited while on tour.
