NEW ASSISTANT
REQUEST FOR BOROUGH SCHOOL EDUCATION BOARD’S DECISION. Permission to appoint, an additional assistant for the Ashburton Borough School has been asked from the Education Department by the Canterbury Education Board, according to advice received at the meeting of' the Borough School Committee last evening. The request for the appointment of the assistant was made by the committee to avoid the congestion which has existed in some of the rooms. Present at the meeting were—Dr. J. Connor and Messrs W. H. Sarney, W. J. Welsh, A. L. Jones, N. L. F. Wood, A. E. Gill, N. F. Milner, and W. K. Waters. In reference to the hand over to the Canterbury Education Board of the Greenstreet ex-committee’s account, the committee was referred by the board to the section of the Education Amendment Act, which stated • that where any school committee ceased to function owing to the closing of the school, funds in the hands of the committee, after meeting its outstanding liabilities, should he paid to the board. The secretary was authorised to refund the amount. The Education Board advised that it had decided to accede to the board’s request for the provision of a hinged draught screen inside the door of Standard II classroom. In connection with the application for additional bicycle sheds the committee was asked how many children riding bicycles lived over on© mile distant from the school. The headmaster (Mr M. J. Leith) re • ported that the average attendance for July was 394.19, and the average number on the roll 418.5. The percentage of attendance was 94.19. The present roll number was 417. Mr Hydo, relieving teacher, had ceased duty. Shingle had been laid on the path to the gate near the infant school, a concrete path was laid in the girls’ ground, and a concrete kerbing was made around the shrubbery. Mrs P. J. Andrew (Tinwald) visited the school and gave a very helpful demonstration on rug-making to the school handicraft club. The > annual fixtures in football and basketball had been arranged as follows by the Ashburton County School Sports Association: —Town v. Country, 'to-day; representative games against South Canterbury, August 12; seven-a-side games, August 18. It was decided to thank Mrs Andrew for her address. Mr Jones reported on the activities of the Ashburton West Dental Clinic, saying that there had been 269 operations for the month. This was a satisfactory number. Hie was granted leave of absence until the end of the year, on account of his forthcoming trip to America. Mr Gill said that the Greenstreet children arrived half-an-hour late for lessons at the Technical High School on Monday mornings, and it was decided to make inquiries to see if the bus timetable could be altered to enable the children to attend the full lesson. ALLENTON COMMITTEE MEETS. At the meeting of the Allenton School Committee, the chairman (Mr E. C. Bathurst) presided. The attendance at the school had not been satisfactory owing to the prevalence of colds, but it was improving a Jittle, said the report of the headmaster (Mr E. S. Chambers). Mr Chambers added that the roll was 273, three pupils having been admitted and three withdrawn recently. The last three w’eekly average attendances were 246.2, 239.9, and 254.9. The annual representative football and basketball matches between Ashburton and South Canterbury schools would take place on August 12 and the annual football and basketball seven-a-side tournament would be held on August 18. It was decided to thank Mr W. Hooper for his work while acting as caretaker.
