NO ACTION TAKEN.

LOCAL BODY AMALGAMATION. WAKANUI ROA© BOARD’S VIEW. In response to a letter received from the Ashburton County Council at its meeting yesterday, no action was taken by the Wakanui Road Board at its meeting yesterday afternoon on the question of the amalgamation of local bodies. The letter from the Council said that the Council had given consideration to the provisions of the Local Bodies Amalgamation Bill, which in the opinion of the Council would bring with it the abolition of road boards. The Council felt, however, that the road boards might prefer to amalgamate with the Council voluntarily rather than to await compulsory action, and that any steps to bring about amalgamation should at present be taken by the boards or the ratepayers. It was stated that a large number of ratepayers were not in favour of amalgamation, and it was decided that no action be taken. Reports on works showed that the daymen had been engaged in maintenance work on Southfield, Bridge, Jones’s, and Rule’s Roads, and had begun work on Wilson’s Road at Wakanui. It was decided to secure pipes for a water-race crossing at the lower end of Butterick’s Road. There w r ere present at the meeting Messrs F. Frampton (chairman), L. Hanrahan, J. W. Watson, and A. Bennett.
